Mid-Year Check-In: How to Tidy Up Your Online Presence

Table of Contents Show

We're halfway through the year! Whether you're excited or wondering 'holy cow, where did the time go???' (cuz, same) here are three things you can do now to set yourself up for success in the coming months.

    01. Do a brand check across the internet.

Most of us have an online presence, especially if we've been in business for more than a couple months. And we can quickly let accounts get out of date.

To do a quick brand check:

    • Google yourself. See the results that come up, including old projects or interviews, or anything you can take offline, edit, or update.

    • If you have a Google Business Profile, give it a once over. Is everything still up to date? Have you posted any new photos, offers, updates recently? Are your hours correct?

    • Check all your other online accounts. For example, if you're an author, check Amazon and Goodreads. If you sell printables, check Etsy and your Stan store. If you're an acupuncturist, check all the directories that link out to you. And so on!

    • Run a backlinks scan on your website. Make sure that your links are up to date and that anyone who's linking to you is going to the right page. Ahrefs has a free tool for this.

Here is a non-exhaustive list to get your gears turning. Are these on brand? Using your current logo, brand colors, fonts, and messaging?

    • Your email marketing platform (ConvertKit, FloDesk, Squarespace Campaigns, etc)

    • Buy Me a Coffee

    • Canva

    • Your CRM (HoneyBook, Dubsado, Moxie, etc)

    • Pinterest

    • Your Social Media Accounts (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, Facebook, etc)

    • Any community groups you run

    02. Get rid of things that take up too much time or energy.

Identify tasks or commitments that drain your time without adding value, and see if you cancel, leave, minimize or automate:

    • Got software you never use but still pay for? Cancel it.

    • Regular meetings that don't produce results? Cut them down or cancel 'em.

    • A networking group that's more gossip than business? Say goodbye.

    • Unused subscriptions? Cancel them.

    • Distracting apps? Limit your usage or remove them.

    • Obligations that no longer serve your goals? Politely decline or step away.

    • Redundant tasks? Find ways to consolidate or eliminate them.

    03. Give your website a lil' refresh.

It can be hard to make time for your website when you're busy running your business, but it's important to stay up to date and on brand.

    • Do a website scan and ask yourself:

      • Is your messaging in line with your current business goals?

      • Do your images, layouts, or branding need an update for better branding or user experience?

      • Do you have new testimonials or portfolio pieces you should add?

      • Are there any pages you should delete, or new ones you need to create?

      • Have you recently reviewed your SEO to ensure your site is Google-friendly?

    • Make sure your blog posts are publishing to Google (you can check and manually push them through in your Google Search Console account)

    • Delete any CSS code you're no longer using

    • Add plugins to jazz up your site a bit - Will Meyers just released a new version of his Tabs for Squarespace that I’m eying and Ghost Plugins have so many fun plugins - one of my favorites is the ConfettiPop! button* (affiliate link! Use code JPKDESIGNCO to get 10% off this or any plugin, template, or membership!)

It might feel overwhelming to tackle, but it needs to be done. And you're the boss, so it's your job to guide your business to reach its potential. Think of this as your loving nudge to get firm and focused. 🫶

    You've got this!

PS - if you need any help with the website stuff, I offer power hours and website audits, and I'd love to help you out!

Here's what the lovely Julia recently said about her website audit:

"This was incredibly helpful thanks so much! Thanks for being so clear and concise while still communicating a TON of value. Super pleased with this service :)
