11 Must-Have Features for an Occupational Therapy Website

Table of Contents Show

I recently completed an Occupational Therapy Website for a business serving neurodivergent adults throughout the state of Oregon. (I get to work with the coolest people!)

Shannon and Natalie were so swamped with clients already they needed a website, like, yesterday.

They found me through SEO (SEO for the win! JPK Design Co is the first result when you search for ‘Squarespace Designer Portland’) and we got them online fast with my Website in a Week offer.

While I was building out their site, I took note of the key elements that needed to be included. Designing your website goes beyond just creating a lovely to look at site (sorry but it’s true!).

    So let’s dive in:

Here are eleven key elements of an effective Occupational Therapy website.

    01. Easy-to-Follow Navigation

It's important that anyone visiting your occupational therapy website can easily navigate around. Make sure your menus are straightforward and your pages are organized logically. This makes it a breeze for visitors to find what they're looking for, whether it's individual service details, how to book an appointment, or the best way to get in touch.

    02. Responsive Design

How often do you end up on a website while browsing on your phone? Most people would answer 'at least 50% of the time!'. These days, people use all kinds of devices to browse online, so having a website that looks great on any device, from phones to tablets to desktops, is a must. A responsive design adjusts to fit the screen, making sure everyone gets a good browsing experience, no matter their device.

    03. Clear Service Descriptions

When potential clients visit your site, they're looking for specific help with their challenges. Offer clear and to-the-point descriptions of your services. Let them know EXACTLY what kinds of therapy you offer and how these can help, without drowning them in too much technical speak.

    04. User-Friendly Interface

A good user interface makes navigating your site feel natural. It should help visitors easily move from reading about your services to booking an appointment. A well-thought-out interface makes using your site a pleasant experience.

    05. Visible Contact Information

Don’t make visitors hunt for your contact details. Keep your phone number, email, and a contact form easy to find right from the get-go. This way, people can reach out to you in the way they find most convenient.

    06. Professional & Inviting Design

Your website’s design should be both professional and inviting. Choose colors and images that are soothing and welcoming—a good fit for a therapy service. This helps make potential clients feel more comfortable right from the start. For example, you’ll probably want to consider soothing colors like muted blue and cream, NOT neon green and dark purple.

    07. Personal Touches

Adding personal touches like photos and bios of your therapy team helps visitors feel connected to the people behind the services. This personal connection builds trust and can make potential clients feel more at ease.

    08. Testimonials and Success Stories

Sharing stories from clients who've benefited from your services can be really persuasive. These testimonials show the real impact of your work and can help convince someone to choose your services - or let them know it's NOT the right fit (which is actually also helpful!).

Tip: Sprinkle testimonials throughout your website, especially if you offer different services and have different feedback for each offering. Whatever you do, DON’T keep them all on one page that people might not even visit!

    09. Educational Blog or Resources

Providing useful content, like a blog or resources on occupational therapy, establishes you as a leading expert in your field. This helps your visitors, and also keeps your website fresh. And bonus - this definitely can help improve you getting found on Google (aka SEO).

    10. Accessibility Features

Make sure your website is accessible to EVERYONE, including those with disabilities.

Features like high color contrast, heading hierarchy, alt text, and keyboard-friendly navigation show that you care about all users and help you stand out from the crowd.

    11. Protection of Sensitive Health Information

Keeping your clients' health information safe is of utmost importance. By implementing high-priority security measures like encrypted forms for bookings and secure data transmission, you show that you're serious about protecting privacy. Follow the rules set by laws like HIPAA to ensure you're handling data correctly. Regularly check your security practices to make sure you’re in compliance and so your website visitors know their personal information is safe.
