What’s the difference between Blog Post Categories vs Tags? 🤔

If you have a blog on your Squarespace site (which, if you want new clients or customers, you totally should), you need to be using Squarespace categories and tags.

Categories and tags help you organize your own website and blog posts, and they also make it easy for visitors to navigate your site - and Google too (SEO baby!)!

This post will explain the difference between Squarespace blog categories and tools, and how and when to effectively use them.

    Blog Categories

Categories are broad groupings that represent the main topics of your blog. They provide a high-level structure for your content and help readers quickly understand what your blog covers.

    Examples

For a lifestyle blog, categories might include categories like:

    • Home Decor

    • Healthy Living

    • Travel Adventures

    • Personal Growth

    🪧 Function

Categories act as signposts, guiding your audience to content they're most likely to be interested in. They give your readers an at-a-glance understanding of your blog's main focus areas.

Try to limit your categories to 4-6 main topics that broadly cover your blog's focus.

    Blog Tags

Tags are more specific keywords that describe the details of individual Squarespace blog posts. They allow you to have more granular classification of your content.

    Examples

For a post titled "My Weekend Getaway to Paris", tags might include:

    • Paris

    • France

    • Europe

    • City break

    • Travel tips

    • 2024

    • Packing Tips

    • Solo Travel

    Function

Tags connect related content across different categories, enhancing the discoverability of your posts. Use as many as you want to describe the content, audience and key phrases related to the post. It helps for searching and categorizing!

BTW - I always include the current year in my tags. It makes it easier to sort and filter, especially if you’re using summary blocks.

    When to Use Categories

    Use categories to:

    • Provide a clear structure for your blog

    • Represent the main topics you regularly write about

    • Limit to 4-6 categories total

    • Limit to 2-3 per blog post

    When to Use Tags

    Use tags to:

    • Highlight specific elements within posts

    • Help readers find more content on particular topics

    • Use as many as you like, the more the better! Just make sure they’re actually related to your post 😜

    • Include the title of your blog post for easier searching

Best Practices for Categories and Tags

    1. Keep categories focused and relevant.

    2. Use tags strategically and avoid overuse.

    3. Maintain consistency in how you apply both.

Using your categories and tags STRATEGICALLY and CONSISTENTLY can improve your Squarespace blog's organization, reader experience, annnnd SEO results. Whoop Whoop!

Once you understand the differences and how to use them, you can create a more structured, professional, and reader-friendly blog.

My recommendation for next steps for you: Take some time to review your current setup and consider how you might refine and structure your blog posts.
