Let's talk about why it's important to use categories and tags well on your Squarespace site.

Last week I broke down the differences between categories and tags for your Squarespace blog (because you ARE blogging, right?)

This week, let's talk about why it's important to use categories and tags well on your Squarespace site.

When you organize your content in the right way, it's easier for visitors to find what they're looking for. Plus, it can give your site more eyeballs in search engine rankings.

In this post, I'll cover how to set up Squarespace blog categories and tags, as well as how to use them to make your site better - for both people and search engines.

Adding Categories and Tags to Blog Posts

Here's how to add categories and tags to your blog posts in Squarespace:

    1. Click on the three dots on the blog post you’re editing

    2. Choose ‘settings’ and look for the "Options" tab.

    3. Find the sections for categories and tags.

    4. Type in your categories and tags. (It doesn’t matter what order you do this in)

    5. If you already some categories and tags listed, they will pop up as you type. Otherwise, just hit enter to add a new category or tag.

When you're picking categories and tags, try to be consistent. It’s great to have a pre-made list of categories you use, so you can be consistent when labeling your blog posts.

Use categories for broad topics and tags for more specific details. Don't go overboard - a few well-chosen ones are better than a long list.

Showing your Categories and Tags throughout your site

There are a few ways to display your blog post categories and tags:

    • Put them at the top or bottom of your blog posts using buttons or links.

    • Show them on your main blog page.

    • Add them to a sidebar (if you have this plugin).

Using Categories and Tags in Your Web Design

Categories and tags can help organize your blog posts, making it easier for your website visitors to find info relevant to them.

    • Make a menu on your blog page to sort posts by category.

    • Show off posts from certain categories on your homepage.

    • Add a "Related Posts" section at the end of each blog post.

    • Create sidebars that list your categories or show posts from specific tags.

    Linking Categories and Tags

You can link to your categories and tags in a few ways:

    • Make text links or buttons that go to all posts in a category.

    • Create image links for your most popular tags.

    • Use URLs like yourdomain.com/category/category-name or yourdomain.com/tag/tag-name.

    Categories and Tags: SEO

Categories and tags aren't just for visitors - they help search engines understand your site too. They show how your content is organized, which can help your pages show up in more search results.

Using categories and tags is good for SEO for a few different reasons:

    1. Better site structure: They help organize your content in a way that's easier for search engines to understand. This clear structure helps search engines figure out what your site is about.

    2. More internal linking: When you use categories and tags, you create more ways for your pages to link to each other. This helps search engines find and index all your content.

    3. Improved experience for your website visitors: Good organization makes it easier for visitors to find what they're looking for. Search engines like websites that people find useful, so this can indirectly help your SEO.

    4. Longer visits: When people can easily find related content through categories and tags, they might stay on your site longer, poking around to see what else you have. This can signal to search engines that your site is valuable.

    5. More specific targeting: Categories and tags can help you target long-tail keywords, which are often easier to rank for.

    6. Fresh content visibility: They make it easier for search engines to find your new content, especially if it's related to older, well-ranking posts.

    7. Rich snippets: Sometimes, search engines might use your categories or tags in search results, giving users more info about your page.

Note: While categories and tags are helpful, they're just one part of SEO. They work best as part of a broader SEO strategy.
